Suitcase Boombox
Initially meant to be a battery-powered speaker box, this retired Samsonite now serves as my workshop sound system.
In order to prevent a rattling noise from the suitcase, I reinforced the front and back with wood. Each channel was separated into 3 frequency bands using two 3-way crossovers.
A panel mounted power switch, 3.5mm audio input, and DC barrel jack were attached and wired to the amplifier. This is so the system can be operated without needing to open the suitcase.
Lessons Learned
Stereo Image
In retrospect, this design could be improved by separating the the smallest speakers (tweeters) by as much distance as possible. Lower frequencies are not typically separated in stereo, but a greater distance between the high frequencies would certainly improve the sound.
Weight matters
This box was originally meant to be portable and battery-powered, but it turned out to be quite heavy. Fortunately, the sound quality is great, so I have been using it in my workshop. If I were to build another with the intention of making it portable, I would choose more lightweight components.
